Through 2022, Meta Platforms suffered one of the great large-company declines of the era — roughly 77% off its 2021 peak. Ad revenue was slowing, Apple's privacy changes were biting, and the market was deeply skeptical of its metaverse spending. By late October 2022, a company recently worth over a trillion dollars traded at a fraction of that.

Then, across late October and early November 2022, the selling returned to the same price area, failed to gather strength, and left behind the shape chart readers call a double bottom — the "W" covered in the Double Tops & Bottoms guide. This case study walks through that structure, in hindsight. It pays special attention to something chart patterns tend to hide: what was actually driving the turn.

The Setup (What You Could See at the Time)

Jun ’22Sep ’22Jan ’23Apr ’23low 1: closes OUTSIDE the lower bandlow 2 undercuts — but closes INSIDE the bandconfirmation level: the high between the lowsMETA · daily · 20-day Bollinger Bandsvolume
The real chart with bands: October's low pierced the lower Bollinger Band; November's undercut closed back inside it — the W-bottom character signature — and the pattern completed only when price cleared the middle high. Real split-adjusted daily closes (source: Twelve Data), shown in hindsight for education — not a recommendation or a prediction.

The Concept

The W bottom is a controlled experiment in seller conviction: same price area, second visit, weaker response. When the retest attracts less volume and less momentum, the pattern's readers conclude that the sellers who made the first low are used up. Confirmation — the break above the middle peak — is what separates a completed W from two lows waiting to become three.

What Happened (In Hindsight)

The stock never returned to those lows. In November 2022 came mass layoffs. In early 2023 came the "year of efficiency" — aggressive cost-cutting that transformed the earnings picture. The stock roughly quadrupled from the low within fifteen months and went on to new all-time highs.

Here's the part this library exists to emphasize: the W bottom didn't do that — the business turnaround did. The pattern marked, with impressive precision, the moment pessimism peaked. But the staying power of the recovery came from cost cuts and re-accelerating revenue. The chart identified the turn; the fundamentals justified it. Patterns without engines fade.

The Lesson

Study It Yourself

Find three other 2022 lows in Ticker Coach: one that W-bottomed and recovered, one that bounced and gave it all back, and one that never confirmed. Compare the second-low volume, the divergences, and what the companies did in the following quarters. The pattern's limits become obvious — and so does its value.
